Yea, Nay, or Meh: Cesar, Pre-season, Blatter, & More

By Curtis Reed (The Homegrown Player)

Julio Cesar to Toronto–Yea:  Toronto are definitely making bold  moves this offseason. There is going to be a lot of pressure on them to succeed early in the season. Typically that means defensive problems so getting Cesar into the team is going to be big. Fitting Cesar, Jermaine Defoe, and Michael Bradley into the salary cap and signing other solid players is going to be a challenge but the core is there.

Providence Park–Meh: Some people get really excited about stadium namings but it’s hard for us. In case you didn’t know, Portland has changed the name of Jeld-Wen Field to Providence Park. Corporate names make sense from a financial aspect but there is no culture to them.

MLS Pre-Season–Yea: Anything that gets us closer to the start of the MLS season has to be a good thing. Teams are taking their preparation more and more seriously in the last couple of years and the number of formal pre-season tournaments teams can participate has grown.

Sepp Blatter Fifth Term–Nay: Let’s make this a super NAY. Blatter is a disaster. He’s constantly saying stupid things. Does anyone believe he isn’t corrupt? He may be good for lining the pockets of executives but he is terrible for the growth and integrity of the game.

Atlanta Expansion–Nay: Another topic that could take a super NAY. We’ve expressed over and over that MLS should stop expanding. We think that Miami is a mistake and that they should have stopped with Orlando. The league salary cap and talent is not growing at the pace it needs to in order to keep up.

U.S. Over South Korea–Meh: A win over any opponent on an international level is a good thing. It was also good to give the U.S. domestic player pool a run out. At the same time, there isn’t a lot that was compelling in the match.

Bruce Arena Contract Extension–Yea: No coach has proven himself more worthy of a contract extension than Bruce Arena. He has the Galaxy has annual contenders and has been extremely smart in his purchases. Well deserved.
