The long transfer saga of U.S. defender Oguchi Onyewu may finally be set to end shortly as Soccer365 has learned that the erstwhile Standard Liège star is now down to heavy talks with Ajax, a La Liga suitor and a pair of Serie A contestants.
According to his agent, all offers from England and France, as well as that of Turkish giants Fenerbahçe, have either fallen to the side or been rejected.
"We are in serious discussions with one Spanish team, two from Serie A and Ajax," Lyle Yorks told Soccer365.
Only vague references to dated interest from Espanyol and Valencia have popped up in the Spanish press, while its Italian counterpart has been abuzz with Onyewu talk for weeks now.
At this stage, the top candidates for the two Serie A bids appear to be Genoa, Palermo and Parma, with the names of Bologna, Catania and Livorno also recently turning up in Italian gossip pages.
Apart from a six-month Newcastle loan stint, Onyewu has been with Standard since January 2004, playing 179 matches and winning consecutive Jupiler League crowns in 2008 and 2009.
