The Chicago Red Stars became the first team in WPS history to come from behind to win a game, scoring a pair of second-half goals Wednesday night to beat Washington, 2-1, in front of 4,127 at TOYOTA PARK.
Lindsay Tarpley was the key to the comeback setting up the equalizer from Cristiane and knocking in the game winner.
“It feels good to put the ball in the back of net and to walk out of here with a win,” the forward said of the goal. “I think that we’re continuing to hold ourselves to high standards. We put pressure on ourselves, good pressure and we expect a certain level. If we don’t reach that level, we’re disappointed.”
The Windy City side failed to convert early chances with one ball cleared off the line by Washington defender Cat Whitehill and two shots hitting the woodwork and then had their backs up against the wall when the Freedom’s Abby Wambach scored for the visitors to take a lead to the break.
The Red Stars continued pressure, outshooting Washington by a 28-16 margin, paid off in the second half with goals in the 48th and 61st minute.
“I was really proud of the way we came together and kept fighting. Throughout this whole season we have continued to fight for each other and push through this time. So to be able to come from behind was a big thing for us.”
