The United States men’s national soccer team surprised most observers with their fourth place finish at the 1995 Copa America which included a resounding 3-0 win over Argentina at the Estadio Parque Artigas in Paysandú, Uruguay in the group stage on this day in soccer history.

Frank Klopas, Alexi Lalas and Erci Wynalda scored in the winning effort. It was the U.S.’s first win against Argentina.

When the U.S. faced Argentina, the South American side had booked their spot in the knockout stage but still fielded a strong squad with the likes of Gabriel Batitusta and Roberto Ayala.
