Sporting Kansas City outlasted Real Salt Lake 7-6 in penalties to win the 2013 MLS Cup at Sporting Park on Saturday. The great home crowd shouted their support as Sporting survived RSL hitting the woodwork 3 times and urged the side on in 20 degree weather.
The match went back-and-forth all day. RSL took the lead with a Alvaro Saborio, who was returning to the lineup after missing the Western Conference final with a hip flexor injury, finish in the 52nd minute but Aurelien Collin leveled matters in the 76th minute.
Regulation and injury time ended 1-1 and that game went through 10 rounds of penalties. Both sides had chances to win it in the shotout only to let the chance slip away and then in the 10th round Collins stepped up and made good from the spot while RSL’s Lovel Palmer could not match the effort.
