Barry Ferguson made a dramatic comeback as Rangers returned to the top of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League with a 2-1 win over Aberdeen.

However, the Ibrox side will be well aware a Celtic victory at Hibernian on Sunday will see the defending champions go back to the summit with one game remaining.

A Richard Foster own-goal and a header from Kenny Miller were enough to seal the points, despite Michael Paton pulling a goal back for the Dons, but whether the narrow victory will be enough for Rangers remains to be seen.

As well as Ferguson - back for the first time since being stripped of the captaincy and banned by the club for his part in the infamous 'Boozegate' affair - referee Stuart Dougal also grabbed the headlines with two harsh red cards for Charlie Mulgrew and Madjid Bougherra a week before retiring from the game.

Hearts brought the curtain down on their season at Tynecastle by claiming third place, courtesy of a comfortable 3-0 victory over Dundee United.

Lee Wallace grabbed an impressive opener after 11 minutes, only his second goal of the season, to end the club's four-game goalless drought.

Bruno Aguiar then netted on 26 minutes to effectively end the contest, before Eggert Jonsson's late penalty sealed only Hearts' second win in nine matches.

Hamilton retained their place in the division despite losing 3-0 at home to derby rivals Motherwell.

Results at Falkirk and Inverness leave those two sides facing a final-day battle to beat the drop while Billy Reid's team, promoted last season, stay up.

David Clarkson opened the scoring midway through the first half, Cillian Sheridan made it 2-0 just before the hour and substitute John Sutton rounded off the win by netting five minutes from time.

So the relegation battle will go to the last day of the season after St Mirren conjured up a fine 2-0 win at Falkirk.

Billy Mehmet's first-half strike and Andy Dorman's 73rd-minute clincher took the Paisley side off the bottom of the table, two points above the Bairns who could have secured their safety with a win.

Falkirk finished with 10 men after veteran defender Steven Pressley was shown a straight red for a clash with Mehmet.

A solitary goal from Kevin Kyle earned a 1-0 victory for Kilmarnock at Rugby Park which seals their top-flight status for another season.

The conspiracy theorists had this one marked down as a draw before kick-off, but the visitors came here to win and will feel unlucky not to have collected at least a point.

The result leaves Inverness very much still in the relegation dogfight.
