Mexican news wrap: New signings in the works

It´s been a calm last week in Mexican soccer, with most teams now in the midst of a series of friendly game to fine tune the team before the start of the “Liga MX.”

That doesn´t mean to say that one or two moves shouldn´t be expected. Indeed, three of Mexico´s top teams could yet pounce and bring in a top foreign name.

Tigres coach Ricardo “Tuca” Ferretti has stressed patience in his club´s bid to sign a player from abroad, saying that there is no rush.

“Maybe we are late because we are being very demanding on ourselves (to get the right player) and we have to take the necessary time,” said Ferretti.

The Brazilian added that the base of the Tigres team is already in place, meaning any player coming in would have to improve the talent base that is already at the club.

Over at Mexican champions Santos, there is a similar situation, with coach Benjamin Galindo maintaining the base of his championship winning team and adding Gerardo Lugo to the mix.

There is still one foreigner spot remaining of the five Mexican clubs are allowed, but Galindo rubbished the rumor that San Lorenzo defender Jonathan Botinelli is set to join the club.

“I can tell you that there is still absolutely nothing concrete, but we still have time,” said Galindo.

The owner of Santos Laguna, Grupo Modelo, was bought out last week by beer giants InBev, casting a measure of uncertainty in the club, but Galindo said that the team would focus exclusively on its soccer and hope that the running of the club doesn´t change.

The other club with an eye out for one more signing is Club America.

Coach Miguel Herrera declared himself satisfied last week with the squad at his disposal, but now says the club may splash out on further reinforcements to accompany newcomers Rubens Sambueza, Adrian Aldrete and Efrain Juarez.

“We haven´t planned (new signing), but if there is something interesting, we´re ready,” said “el Piojo.”

If there are to be any fresh faces, the deals will have to be complete by July 10, which is the registration deadline.

In other news, Monterrey defender Ricardo Osorio underwent a successful operation on his right ankle on Monday. He is expected to be out of the game for three to four months.

In the latest world club rankings by IFFHS, Monterrey and Santos Laguna come in 43rd, Cruz Azul and Morelia in 85th, Pumas in 128th, Tigres in 160th and Chivas in 255th.
