With Chivas involved in a crucial Copa Libertadores game in Uruguay and Pumas, Monterrey and Santos Laguna all in CONCACAF Champions league action, there´s plenty of action involving Mexican sides on Wednesday night.
Chivas de Guadalajara face a complicated game in Uruguay against Defensor Sporting on Wednesday evening, knowing a win would put them within three points of making the knockout rounds, but that a loss would make them rank outsiders to qualify.
The Rebaño Sagrado sits in third place in Group 7 of the competition after three matches, one point above Defensor, who has also played three matches. Argentina´s Velez Sarsfield leads the group on nine points, with Deportivo Quito in second, level with points with Chivas, but having played one more game.
The mission has to be not to lose, although captain Hector Reynoso says the team will try to force the game.
“We are motivated and it is an opportunity for us to continue advancing,” said Reynoso. “We are going for the victory.”
Chivas won 1-0 in the first game in Guadalajara and the Mexican-only side is unbeaten in six games, after going 13 matches without a victory.
Defensor is unbeaten so far this season in the Uruguayan league, winning three and drawing one of its four games.
Chivas´ trip to Uruguay took 15 hours, with a stop-over in Panama City, after a tough game last Saturday against Toluca.
In the CONCACAF Champions League semifinal, reigning champion Monterrey continues its defense against Pumas UNAM in the Estadio Tecnologico.
Monterrey sealed its place among the last four with a 7-2 aggregate win over Morelia, while Pumas racked up an even bigger 9-2 deficit over both legs against Salvadoran side Metapan.
Humberto Suazo and Dario Carreño are on a hot streak, with five goals apiece in the current CONCACAF campaign, while Pumas’ Martin Bravo and Eduardo Herrera have each scored four in this year’s competition.
Domestically, Monterrey is enjoying the better season and is favorites to advance. Los Rayados sit fourth in the Primera Division, with Pumas wallowing ten places below them. The two sides drew 1-1 back in January, but Pumas emerged victorious in their previous two encounters.
The team from Mexico City has the better head-to-head record, having won 13 of the 25 games the pair have contested, while Monterrey has won just seven.
In the other semi, Canada´s Toronto FC is charged with disrupting the Mexican CCL party as it takes on Santos Laguna.
The first leg is at Toronto´s BMO Field, with Santos, Mexico´s league leaders, heavy favorites.
Toronto comes into the game off the back of a 3-0 loss against San Jose Earthquakes, while Monterrey easily defeated Estudiantes Tecos 4-0.
The return legs for the CCL games are next Wednesday.
