Sky Blue FC of Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) announced two new additions to its 2012 roster on Tuesday, with English striker Gemma Davison and midfielder Amanda DaCosta joining the team. Both players will be wearing Sky Blue FC kits for the first time next season, and the pair will be looking to make an immediate impression for the New Jersey club.
"We are very excited to have Gemma as part of our team in 2012," Sky Blue FC head coach Jim Gabarra remarked. "She provides an explosive and dynamic player on the flank, and we look forward to her showcasing her skills on the field for us next season."
Davison brings international experience on every level of the English National Team to Sky Blue FC, joining the team after spending this past season with the eventual WPS Champion Western New York Flash. She made 12 appearances for the Flash in 2011, including five starts, and she contributed a goal and two assists to the offensive cause. Prior to her time in WPS, the playmaking forward suited up for the Arsenal Ladies in her native England for four seasons, where Sky Blue FC assistant coach Emma Hayes was performing that same role for the Women's Premiere League club. Davison also spent time playing in the United States for the USL W-League from 2008-10, capping off that last season by winning a league title with the Buffalo Flash.
"I have known Gemma since she was a junior at Arsenal," Hayes confirmed. "She has unbelievable 1v1 ability, and, with one season at WPS under her belt, we think she will really excel this year. She is so dangerous when in full flow, and we hope she creates a lot for us this season."
DaCosta arrives in New Jersey after spending her rookie WPS campaign this past season with magicJack. Before she joined the professional ranks, the New York native had one of the most prolific college careers in Florida State University history, earning All-America honors her senior year and receiving All-ACC accolades after all four years she spent in Tallahassee. She also shares the school record for game-winning assists (10), ranks third in career assists (24) and sits fourth on the list with 94 career starts. While playing college soccer, DaCosta also spent time with Quickstrike FC, formerly a USL W-League club and Sky Blue FC affiliate which was based out of Hudson Valley, New York.
"Amanda is a really good playmaker who we have had our eyes on since she played for Quickstrike," Gabarra stated. "She is a versatile player who can play attacking midfield but also slide out wide. We see her being very effective for us in either role over the course of the 2012 season."
Hayes mirrored the thoughts of Gabarra regarding the acquisition.
"Amanda was one of the top prospects coming out last year, and she is hungry to play in WPS," she commented. "Again, with a season under her belt, she is exactly the type of ambitious player we were looking for. She reminds me of (U.S. National Team midfielder) Sinead Farrelly, and we are really excited to see her develop at Sky Blue FC."
