U.S. MNT Steal Azteca Win

The U.S. men’s national team made history on Wednesday night with a 1-0 win over Mexico at Azteca Stadium. The win is the first on Mexican soil for the MNT. The lone goal was set up by a trio of second half substitutes with Michael Orozco Fiscal making the final touch in the 80th minute.

After Mexico controlled most of the possession although created few solid chances, the Red, White and Blue made their one good chance pay off. But it was not pretty.

Brek Shea received a ball on the left flank and did well to dribble his defender at the left corner of the penalty area but an inadvertent touch appeared to put the ball too far ahead of him. The FC Dallas player was able to run it down and play it to the top of the 6-yard box to Terrence Boyd. With his back to goal, Boyd had few options so back-heeled it toward goal where Orozco Fiscal finished from close range.

Tim Howard made the one goal stand up with two huge saves in the final 10 minutes. The first save came off a deflection where Howard was wrong-footed but used his athleticism to reverse course and palm the ball clear of the line and the second was a reaction save off a well placed header by Chicharito.

Jurgen Klinsmann ran out a very inexperienced line-up especially across the back four. Maurice Edu and Geoff Cameron combined in central defense with Fabian Johnson and Edgar Castillo playing out wide.

In the process of taking their first win in Mexico, the U.S. did their part to spoil the Olympic gold medal celebration of the Mexico Under-23 side. The team was honored at halftime.
