After going down 2-0 early in the first half, the U.S. men’s national team fought from behind but could never get back into the match eventually losing 4-1 at FedEx Field on Wednesday night. Herculez Gomez scored the lone goal shortly before halftime to give the U.S. hope heading into the break.
Otherwise the first half was all Brazil. The five time World Cup winners looked in control despite having a very young and inexperienced roster. Neymar scored the opener in the 12th minute from the penalty spot after Oguchi Onyewu was called for a questionable hand ball in the box. Thiago Silva doubled the margin on after finding himself unmarked at the top of the 6-yard box on a corner kick.
Gomez, who was active the entire night, did well to time his run to finish off a Fabian Johnson service in the 45th minute. Michael Bradley did well to hold the ball to allow Johnson time to make his run behind the defense in the box before slotting him in. The Hoffenheim player then slot the ball back to the top of the 6-yard box for Gomez to score from close range.
The Stars and Stripes looked dangerous in the second half but could not find the final touch to level matters and while pushing for an equalizer Brazil made the home team pay. Marcelo score to make it 3-1 in the 52nd minute.
The U.S. was unfortunate not to score a second goal, however. Gomez was denied after Clint Dempsey played a beautiful ball over the top only for the Brazilian keeper to get a hand to it and the loose ball was well played on goal by Terrence Boyd only for the keeper to make a miraculous kick save.
Onyewu saw a header from a corner kick comeback off the crossbar.
And with time running down Pato finished the scoring with a well taken shot from a tight angle.
