Time to Get Excited about USA Women's Soccer

The soccer highlight for me in summer 2011 was the Women’s World Cup in Germany. It was summer that also had the Gold Cup and Copa America, but watching the United States women play was the most entertaining for me. It was a team that played attacking soccer and faced adversity before falling short of winning the tournament.

Now the US Women’s Olympic team is looking for revenge in Great Britain this year. They beat France 4-2 in their opening match on Wednesday in Glasgow. The way the US played reminded me of the team from one year ago and fans should look forward to watching the women’s tournament over the next two weeks.

The United States fell behind early 2-0. The defense looked shaky like it did at the World Cup and the US could’ve easily got frustrated. However, the leadership for the US kicked in and they stormed back. The lethal striker duo of Abby Wambach and Alex Morgan each replied to tie the match by halftime.

With all the momentum towards the US, substitute Carli Lloyd scored the eventual winner on a strike from outside the box. Lloyd came on for an injured Shannon Boxx when the score was 2-0 and immediately impacted the match. Alex Morgan added her second goal on the night to insure a United States victory.

France should be the USA’s toughest group test. Colombia awaits America on Saturday in Glasgow. The US plays North Korea is the last group match next Tuesday at Old Trafford.

Last year players like Wambach, Morgan and Hope Solo became household names and the faces of women sports in America. With the US women back in competitive action, it is time for the team to gain more national exposure.
