EUROPEAN CUP 2012 COMMENTARY: BRING ON THE NEW POINTS SYSTEM!

Published: Saturday, 16. June, 2012 in category Mark’s Mayhem

I never thought I would be suggesting that we take a page from the youth soccer tournament points system, but it's time that FIFA made some drastic changes.

I love the Golden Goal. My reasoning behind that is that EVERYTHING should be done to avoid penalty kicks. So as international overtime stands now, you score in overtime and then WE score in overtime and we're still tied and we go to penalty kicks!

They are no way to decide a game. The same way that goal differential should not be so critical in some cases with the Euros. It ended up NOT being in Group A, but before the game and during it the commentators were talking about all the equations and you would have had to have been a mathemetician to figure it out.

One point and three points do not create enough variables in a three game bracket to keep compelling enough. Today wasn't compelling enough for you Mark, you will ask?

No, it was crap. Greece has no business advancing and the Poland game was flat-out awful to watch. FIFA should take a page from youth tournament scoring and reward six points for a win...one point for a shutout and unlike youth scoring where they only allow a point for every goal up to three...allow a point for every goal scored.

A tie is still just one point and give the points for every goal scored and the shutout point. I WANT POINTS! I don't want there to be a chance that all three teams can have four points after their group games! Then we go to goal differential...and the equations. Just make it so that teams, and I'm only talking tournament play for now...not in league play...can rack up quite a few points, make the chance of tie-breakers even slimmer.

I didn't even care about the second games of the group because almost regardless of what happened teams could catch everybody in the last game of the group and still advance i.e. GREECE.

Time for FIFA to evolve again and we all know what the chances of that happening are.

The new scoring system WOULD make the games more entertaining and the chance of tie-breakers slimmer.

Maybe even adopt it at the club level too, because I'm not convinced that Man City deserved the crown based on goal differential. But that argument should be left for another day.

Everything should be done to avoid tie-breakers by offering more ways to gobble up points during the run of play. FIFA won't ever do it, but it's the best thing they could do. AND bring back the Golden Goal.

SHOULD FIFA ADOPT A POINTS SYSTEM LIKE THE ONE LINCIR HAS SUGGESTED?
