Young: Picked up shin injury in victory over Ukraine

The winger was caught by Andriy Shevchenko as the Three Lions beat the co-hosts 1-0 on Tuesday to advance to the quarter-finals as winners of Group D.

He looked in obvious discomfort at the end of the match and manager Roy Hodgson is now waiting to learn if he will be fit to face the Azzurri.

It remains to be seen if Young will train at England's Hutnik base on Thursday, but the 26-year-old is said to be 'hopeful' of making a full recovery for Sunday's fixture in Kiev.

Hodgson had to contend with a number of injuries before the start of the tournament as Frank Lampard, Gareth Barry, Gary Cahill and John Ruddy all had to withdraw from the squad.

But he has had better luck since travelling to Poland and has only made changes for tactical reasons during England's first three matches.

Wayne Rooney came in to provide attacking support for Danny Welbeck against Ukraine after serving a two-match suspension, with Young on the left wing.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain started on the left of midfield in the draw with France and would be an option for Hodgson if Young was ruled out.

Theo Walcott will also be hoping to start after coming off the substitutes' bench in all three group games and making an impressive impact in the victory over Sweden.
