The 2014 MLS season is upon us. With that we make our predictions.
MLS Cup: New York Red Bulls
This is always the hardest subject to pick because it often doesn’t go to the best team throughout the regular season, instead it goes to the team that gets the hottest during the playoffs. With that in mind we think that the Red Bulls, with Thierry Henry, Jamison Olave, and Tim Cahill all in tow get the job donee
Supporter’s Shield: Real Salt Lake
RSL winning the Supporter’s Shield will be a huge surprise but if you think about it, the team has been the most consistent team in the league over the last five years and has brought back nearly their entire roster. Sure, they are a year older but last year they nearly won three trophies all while enduring countless injuries.
MVP: Robbie Keane
Keane eats MLS defenders for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There are only a handful of centerbacks in the league that can defend him properly. Expect Keane to score a bunch of goals this season for a strong Galaxy team. He’ll win the Golden Boot award as well.
Goalkeeper of the Year: Nick Rimando
We think that Stefan Frei will have a comeback year and be very strong but frankly Seattle’s defense looks shaky. Rimando has a better defense in front of him and can make the spectacular saves his team needs. He wins.
Defender of the Year: Jamison Olave
When healthy Olave is the best defender in the league. That will shine through once again. Matt Besler and Omar Gonzalez will be too tired from World Cup duty to have as strong of a year as in the past.
Coach of the Year: Bruce Arena
We think the Galaxy will finish second in the Supporter’s Shield race. Arena will deservedly get credit for brining in strong players, dealing with World Cup absences, and still getting the job done.
Rookie of the Year: Andre Blake
Expect Blake to win the starting job in Philly soon. As soon as he does that he shouldn’t have a problem standing out from a weak rookie class.
