With his instantly recognizable bald head, Pierluigi Collina is considered one of the best soccer referees of all time and it was on this day in soccer history in 1960 that the Italian official was born.
As with many referees, Collina started off as a football player but quickly discovered in 1977 that his talent was in the center of the field making the calls. He rose through the ranks and by the early 1990’s was officiating Serie B and Serie A matches.
He went on to calls games at FIFA World Cups, the Olympics, European Championships, UEFA Champions League and almost all other top tournaments.
While many think his bald look was by design it is due having contracted a severe form of alopecia in the 1990’s which resulted in him losing all his facial hair.
