La Liga is one of the top domestic football leagues in Europe and it was on this day in soccer history in 1929 that the Spanish top flight first played matches.
Jose Maria Acha, a director at Arenas Club de Getxo, was the man behind the push for the domestic league. He first suggested a top flight with the biggest clubs participating in 1927.
One of the first issues was which teams to include in the inaugural league but eventually Barcelona, Real Madrid, Athletic Bilbao, Real Sociedad, Arenas Club de Getxo, Real Unión, Athletic Madrid, RCD Español, CE Europa ,and Racing Santander were selected.
Barcelona went on to win the inaugural Primera División title and along with Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao have never been relegated from the top division.
