Kirkland displays are a Brucey bonus
2008-11-21 18:11:00

Latics goalkeeper Kirkland, 27, is aiming to maintain his record of not missing a match this season when they face Everton on Monday.

He has stayed consistently fit after being hampered by a series of injuries throughout his career, which has seen him stuck on just one England cap.

In the process he has found himself behind the likes of David James, Scott Carson, Joe Hart and Paul Robinson.

James was employed by England manager Fabio Capello in the first half of the victory against Germany in midweek then Carson came on for the last 45 minutes.

While Bruce admits Kirkland still has an issue with his back if he has to travel long distances, the situation is improving.

"We are trying to manage it as best we can," said the Wigan boss. "The more he plays, the more comfortable he is with himself and the new training regime.

"Thankfully he has not missed a game all season and I am sure he will have to come into the England reckoning at some point.

"He is certainly the best goalkeeper I have worked with in my time as a manager."

Bruce revealed the club are in dialogue with Capello's backroom staff regarding the shot-stopper's fitness.

Kirkland made his one and only senior international appearance in 2006 when he stepped off the bench against Greece.

Bruce said: "We have conversations with England particularly (goalkeeping coach) Ray Clemence. Chris finds it a problem to sit on planes, buses and go travelling. We all know he has a bit of back problem.

"When he does have to fly off around the world he does struggle. But we are trying to help him as much as we can.

"He has everything you need from a goalkeeper and I am sure he must be in the thoughts of the England manager."

Bruce believes there is little room for error in the top flight this season with more than half the teams bunched up.

He said: "I have been lucky enough to have been around the Premier League for the last six or seven years and there is usually one or two adrift at this stage of the season.

"But it is quite incredible that 14 clubs are looking over their shoulder. That shows the competition is fair and there is everything to play for."
