Chelsea Advance Despite Loss

Basel_v_Chelsea_2Chelsea became the 5th team to qualify for the Champions League Round of 16 despite their 1-0 loss to Basel on Tuesday.  The Blues join Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, and Manchester City in the elimination round.

Jose Mourinho’s side never looked in sync offensively and fell to a late goal from Basel’s Mohamed Salah at St Jakob Park.  The result was huge for the home side.  They complete the double over Chelsea and jumped into second place in Group E.  Schalke and Steau Bucharest finished level at 0-0.

Group F is still wide open.  Arsenal defeated Marseille on a brace from Jack Wilshere with goals in the 1st and 65th minutes and are on top of the pile with 12 points but with both Borussia Dortmund and Napoli tied on 9 points there is no guarantee that the Gunners will advance.  Dortmund downed Napoli 3-1 and are should be feeling confident with facing eliminated Marseille in the final group game.  Shockingly it could be possible for a team with 12 points to be dumped at this stage.

With 1 game remaining in the Group Stage the worst these sides – Basel, Schalke, Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund, Napoli, Zenit St Petersburg, Porto, Ajax, and AC Milan – can do is to drop into the Europa League elimination round.

The outlook is not as good for these teams – Steau Bucharest, Marseille, Austria Wien, and Celtic – who have been eliminated from Europe.
