Eight teams have booked a place in the Champions League Round of 16 after Manchester United, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain booked their places on Wednesday. The remaining teams will be determined in the final group games on December 10th and 11th.
The Red Devils went through in style from Group A with a 5-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen at BayArena. Wayne Rooney did not find the net but was critical in setting on 4 of the team’s goals. Rooney’s delicate cross found Antonio Valencia for the opener, his free-kick was headed in by Emir Spahic for an own goal, a Jonny Evans put home a Rooney rebound, and then the England international set up Chris Smalling’s goal.
The loss ended Bayer’s 8 game winning streak in the group stage.
Shakhtar Donetsk took care of business with a 4-0 win over Real Sociedad at Donbass Arena. Luiz Adriano, Alex Teixeira and a brace from Douglas Costa was the difference to put them into 2nd place in the group. They travel to Old Trafford for a difficult fight for 1st in the final matchday.
The scoring was high in Group B as well with 10-man Real Madrid stamping their place in the next round with a 4-1 win over Galatasaray. Sergio Ramos saw red in the 26th minute but even without Cristiano Ronaldo in the lineup or on the bench the home side prevailed. They spread the wealth with Gareth Bale opening the scoring in the first half. The game was tied at the break but goals from Álvaro Arbeloa, Ángel Di María and Isco in the second sealed the deal.
Juventus can breath a little easier after posting a 3-1 win over Copenhagen at Juventus Stadium. Arturo Vidal knocked in a hat-trick which takes the Serie A side to second in the battle for second place from Group B.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic made his 100th Champions League appearance and scored the opener for Paris Saint-Germain against Olympiacos but a 90th minute winner from Edinson Cavani was the difference in the 2-1 win. The late goal was costly for the Greek side who are now tied on points with Benfica.
Benfica defeated Anderlecht 3-2 at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium and were the beneficiaries of a 90th minute goal as well from substitute Rodrigo. They face a tough final matchday challenge in PSG.
Bayern Munich and Manchester City booked their place in the last round and took care of business despite not needing a result. The Bundesliga side downed CSKA Moscow 3-1 while the Premier League side were 4-2 winners over Plzen.
